Why your county matters more than your state

Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are approved county by county, not state by state. Two people in Indiana an hour apart can be offered completely different plans, different networks and different drug lists. A plan a neighbor recommends may not even be sold where you live.

That is the whole reason a review starts with your ZIP code. What is offered in your specific county gets looked up rather than assumed, along with whether your doctors are in the network and whether your prescriptions are on the plan's drug list.

When you can make a change

• Turning 65: your window opens three months before your birthday month and closes three months after it. Missing it can attach a permanent Part B late enrollment penalty.
• October 15 to December 7: the Annual Enrollment Period, when anyone on Medicare can change plans for the following January.
• January 1 to March 31: if you are already on a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one chance to switch.
• Special circumstances: moving, losing employer coverage, or having both Medicare and Medicaid can each open a window outside those dates.
